Drastic Increase in Credit Card Skimmers Found
Recently there has been significant increase in the number of bank card skimming devices found inside fuel dispensers, with 17 found in the past 9 days and 24 found in the past 6 weeks, according to the Weight and Measures Services Division (WMSD or Division).
Most of these have been identified throughout Maricopa County, in all portions of the valley. One was found in Oro Valley. Although these are the areas currently identified, the Division does not rule out any areas of the state because these criminals seem to hit states and travel around when they are doing these installations. As such, WMSD is asking that you take action to increase your efforts to protect your dispensers.
Following are some suggestions on actions you can take:
1. Increase daily inspections at your site to look for skimming devices. A training presentation to help you and your staff with skimmer inspections is posted on the WMSD website (see “Gas Station Skimmer Training Presentation toward bottom of page).
2. Use security tape on panel opening with a carefully monitored inspection program.
3. Upgrade dispenser locks from the standard locks that are provided.
4. Lock other portions of the dispenser that allow installation of locks.
5. Install alarm systems that notify you and/or shut down dispensers when opened by unauthorized personnel.
6. Maintain cameras on fueling pad.
7. Upgrade chip-enabled card readers.
This list is not meant to be comprehensive as there are many differing dispenser types and security measures that might best fit your needs. You can talk to your service representative or research various options that might work for your site.
