Water, School Safety and Funding, and Trade Were Top Priorities in Governor Ducey’s State of the State

Yesterday, Arizona Speaker of the House Rusty Bowers gaveled in the start of the 54th Legislature and lawmakers from both chambers took their oaths of office.

Governor Doug Ducey gave his State of the State address, the first since his reelection to his second and final term as governor. Ducey asked lawmakers to meet the January 31 deadline for the state’s contributions to the Drought Contingency Plan.

The Governor’s broad legislative agenda also includes eliminating legislative immunity, enacting his school safety plan, continuing the commitment of 20% teacher raises by 2020, investing in other school programs, and recognizing occupational licenses for new residents.

Jackson’s Car Wash got a shout out for participating in a job fair for soon-to-be-released prisoners as part of the Arizona’s Second Chance Centers. Ducey also addressed his commitment to bipartisanship and enhancing our trade relationship with Mexico.

Even with a $1 Billion surplus, Governor Ducey promises that his budget (which will be released on Friday) will be “pretty light reading” with the goal of adding to the state’s Rainy Day Fund.
