2016 APMA Annual Conference Wrap Up

Innovate, Integrate, Motivate

Sedona Hilton at Bell Rock & Sedona Golf Resort

September 11-13

Sedona, Arizona

For the 2016 Annual Conference and Golf Tournament, APMA returned to the stunning red rocks and comfortable weather of Sedona.  The Conference was hosted at the Sedona Hilton at Bell Rock on Sunday, September 11 and Monday, September 12. The Golf Tournament was played at the Sedona Golf Resort on Tuesday, September 13.
The conference opened on Sunday evening with a Casino Night welcome reception. From craps to roulette to blackjack, attendees gambled their monopoly money away.  Steve Tolboe from Western States Petroleum was the big winner of the night and received a prize.  Attendees enjoyed drinks and Southwestern appetizers along with the Cardinals home opener against the Patriots.
Monday morning started with breakfast and a welcome from APMA President Jason Davis with Arizona Fuel Distributors.  Next up, attendees heard from Bob Stout with Horizon Insurance Group about how safety impacts a business’s bottom line.
Department of Agriculture Director Mark Killian discussed the transition of Weights and Measures into a services division of the Department.  He highlighted the enormous number of credit card skimmers found in Arizona so far this year – over 60 skimming devices through September instead of only 11 skimming devices through all of 2016.  He also discussed new agricultural businesses coming into Arizona and Governor Ducey’s plans to improve state government.
APMA contract lobbyist Mike Williams with Williams & Associates gave a legislative update and forecast.  He discussed legislative progress on the diesel tax equalization and the protection of the Underground Storage Tank Revolving Fund program.
Next up, Amanda Gray from APMA gave an association update presentation with live polling questions.  Michael Cox from Federated Insurance presented on distracted driving consequences and procedures to protect businesses.  Jamie Rothschild from Silent Witness spoke about their program and how to get involved.
During a working lunch, PMAA President Rob Underwood shared information about what the national federation has done for petroleum marketers on Capitol Hill.  Attendees then enjoyed an afternoon break.
At the Signature Dinner, Jason Davis presented the 2016 Member of the Year Award to Tyler Herzog from Cochise Companies.  Carolyn Kennedy, wife of John Kennedy with Environmental Technology, won the 50/50 raffle and donated the proceeds back to the PMAA SBC PAC.
Tom Kloza, OPIS Global Head of Energy Analysis, came in from New Jersey to give the keynote address which combined comedy and insight.
On Tuesday, golfers played the Sedona Golf Resort after an 8 am shotgun start.  It was a windy but wonderful and the rain held off until after the round.  The conference closed with an Awards Luncheon.
